The Northern capital of Russia, the Venice of the North, the Cultural Capital of Russia, the Window on Europe… These names of the city are frequently mentioned by both Russian and foreign guests. True Saint-Petersburgers call it Piter. And both decorate it with such epithets as fantastic, unforgettable, brilliant, stunning, lovely, cute… The city was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. Historically, there were other names of the city like revolutionary Petrograd, Soviet Leningrad… Still the older Leningraders call the city by the Soviet name. So many names, so many facets…

Today, about 4.6 million people live here. It is the second largest city after Moscow covering the area of 1439 sq. km. Saint-Petersburg is considered the most Northern city in the world with the population of over 1 million. It is located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, part of the Baltic Sea that affects the moderate climate here. The warmest July averages +18.1 oC, and January average temperature is -6.1 oC.
